He came in like a Wrecking Ball...

Well... in recent news I no longer have a wardrobe and Loki is now on a diet.

It started on a quiet afternoon, as pet related incidences often do. The sun was shining and a gentle breeze was blowing, things were right with the world and the pets were relaxing in their customary afternoon nap, or so we thought.

Suddenly a very loud crash cut through the silence, panic griped me. "We can't be being burgled in the middle of the day can we? Oh gods where are the cats!?" Cue a sheepish Loki darting from the bedroom. "Is he hurt? No phew." I allow myself to feel relief before my brain catches up with me that a sheepish looking cat has just bolted from the sound of much destruction.

Tentatively open the now half closed door wondering what expensive thing will be broken THIS TIME...

The site that greets me can only be described as chaos, a canvas wardrobe crumpled in on itself, poles poking out like a skeleton of broken bones. Socks, cuddly toys and shirts sticking hap-hazard out of the wreckage like a very small, localised tornado hit only the wardrobe.

No chance of Narnia for me then. :(

So I need to repair a canvas wardrobe and hope that none of the poles snapped under the wrecking ball that is Loki, he is however, much to his chagrin, now on a diet to slim him down a little, though sneaking his brothers food has not helped in keeping him at a good weight.

Urg cats!

Loki's Rescue Story (how to introduce cats)

Some of you may be wanting to know a little more about the cats since we Pupdate a lot and Freya hogs the limelight often.

So I would like to share with you all the story of how Loki came into our lives. Let me take you back a few years, it was summer and the bloke was at work (a pretty normal day by all accounts). Suddenly a dirty little ball of fur shoots under his work van. After a bit of kerfuffle, in which one person got quite scratched up, the little kitten was scooped out and calmed down. So I get a phone call explaining this situation, we already have a cat Godric so its a gamble but fate does seem to be nudging us to rescue this poor little kitten.

He was covered in dirt, skinny, thirsty and more than a little scared. We naturally took him to the vets to check if he was chipped and looked for posters or missing notices but none were found and a scan showed he wasn't chipped. He was a such cute little goozgog that we couldn't believe he wasn't lost. However through his behavior quirks a likely picture formed of just why such a cute little kitten was scared and alone under a van. Firstly he was fully toilet trained which is odd for a kitten of 12ish months, so he had to have been domestic and taught well by mum-cat/humans. He also has to this day an intense fear of being walked anywhere in a box. (He does not mind car trips, we think because he was rescued and brought home in a van, so only good memories). That coupled with the fact that he was a complete terrorist of a kitten who seemed a little wary of humans at first, seems to indicate that he was in fact taken in a box to the middle of nowhere and dumped. He had been on the streets for a fortnight bare minimum according to the vet and other than fleas, ear-mites and his obvious malnourished state he was pretty healthy and lucky to be so.

So we set about socializing him with Godric. Loki had been thrown out and we vowed to give him a forever home. Now socializing cats is a rather lengthy process. Be prepared for it to take at least 3-4 months before the cats will even tolerate each other and they may never get to be in the same social group. First off Loki lived in a separate room in the house. This is best to do at the start so cats can get used to each others smell without having direct sight or confrontation. We also decided to use a bonding 'cheat' that we call the 'love-cloth' which is a slightly damp flannel (luke-warm for comfort) that you then use to groom the established cat before grooming the new cat, so the established cats scent mixes with the new cats scent, then you groom them each with the 'love-cloth' again to create a group scent, for a little added impact once we were done with the cats it got rubbed all over furniture to make the rooms more welcoming and smell of the new group scent. This trick can also work by using the same brush to groom each cat and can also work when introducing a dog into the mix. Also worth noting is that if the cats start fighting again these tricks can also help then. To cats scent is everything!

After a while we ready to move onto supervised play dates. It's important at this stage to get the cats playing together over common interests (string and the 'red dot' seem to work well) and giving each a lot of praise and treats so that they associate the other with fun and good times.

When they can be trusted contact can be gradually opened up more and more until they can be left unsupervised together.

Some key things to look for that mean they are in the same social group ie friends are; mutual grooming (if they clean each other this is a really positive thing) and co-sleeping (the closer the sleep the more they like each other).

Naturally we were delighted when these things happened a lot faster than we thought they would and Godric finally started to hardcore protest his little brother living in a different room, not stopping trying to scratch down the door or his meows of distaste until he was let out. After three weeks we had cracked it. We were shocked but super happy and very proud of Godric who became big-brother-mum and really looked after Loki.

So Loki and Godric became brothers and Loki himself was nursed back to full health. He has now grown into a handsome, cheeky, loving little devil and we are couldn't be more proud of how far he has come from the tiny, hungry ball of fur we rescued. Sometimes I miss him being so small and cute but its worth it seeing how happy he is now. I hope the tips help you and that you liked seeing where this chaps story began. Thanks for reading and here is hoping we have many more stories to share. I want to leave you with a pic of Loki as he is all grown up, he is even bigger than Godric now!

The Cat-Flap Story.

So recently we have had to do some 'home improvement' owing to the fact that Freya, in all her puppy wisdom, decided that cat litter was in fact fine dining and spent a vast amount of time trying to sneak into the bathroom and stuff herself.

After much deliberation we decided the solution would be to instal a cat-flap into the bathroom door.  Which we did... Thus we spent the best part of a week trying to show the cats how it worked, poking it open from both sides and holding it up for both of them to go through. Godric kept trying to push the bottom of it as if that would lift the flap and Loki would stare at you through it until you opened it for him.

We tried food and toys, coaxing and reassurance but or efforts were in vain! Our cats really don't get the concept of a cat flap, so much of the week was also spent being butlers for their whim to enter and leave the bathroom.

What our cats do get however is holes. So we had to actually had to remove the flap itself leaving us a nice framed hole in our bathroom door so the cats can get to the litter and Freya can't. Given our cats particular personalities I have dubbed this the 'portal of perv' because for some strange reason they both seem to like watching folks on the toilet.

We are all betting Freya will get her head stuck in it at some point... Stay tuned for pictures and stories!

My cat is an asshole... (why I love Feliway)

There is no easy way to admit to yourself that your pet is a jerk, even though most cat owners know deep down that their cats are at least a percent of a jerk, I mean cats are cats right? They knock glasses of water off of sides, meow and poke you at 6am because they want food, general cat jerkiness.

So what makes Loki different from this normal level of jerk cat and pushes him into full on asshole territory?

Biting... all the damn time. Loki earned the middle name of Oni (meaning demon in Japanese) because apart from his mischief antics, like being found half way up the curtains or on the tops of high cupboards etc, he had a penchant for attacking and biting humans.

So what exactly is Feliway you may be wondering and why do I love it so much? Well to start I shall give you a link to the product on a site I use a lot to order it. Feliway is a product that calms and soothes cats via the use of cat pheromones, making it completely odorless to humans and other animals. It comes in a plug in and a spray but we tend to just use the plug in.

So why do I love it? Well Loki could almost be the poster child for this product. No really I am not joking if the makers are reading this my cat could sell your product big time! Also THANK YOU!! When the Feliway is plugged in Loki goes from angry attack cat / mrbiteyourface to the most sweet and loving cat you have ever seen. He loves kisses and cuddles and will wash your arm forever with sandpaper kisses.

When we run out, which we sadly do as this product is a tiny bit costly and generally lasts 4ish weeks so sometimes runs out before payday, we are damn near held hostage until it arrives. Day one without Feliway Loki becomes grumpy and offish which is not to bad. Day two without Feliway he starts becoming increasingly aggressive and by day three he is back to full blown asshole mode, biting people in the head and generally being horrid to Godric.

I would recommend any owner of a troubled cat to get this product because it has literally changed our lives. Loki is so much happier and affectionate, isn't territorial anymore (we had issues with him... erm... marking people as well as objects) and is just generally the cat he was meant to be. It has also worked wonders for Godric the neurotic one.

So there you have it, Loki is still a menace but a much more loving and happy menace.

I am just going to leave a link to Feliway's website here so you can check it out for yourself.

Introducing the Stars!

I would like to kick this blog off by introducing you to the main stars of the show! Our new Puppy Freya and our two cats Godric and Loki.

This is Freya Rosa the newest addition to our mad house! She is a Golden Retriever, her breed means she is dopey and loving with a winning 'Golden Smile' and she loves to chew. She is a smart little cookie but don't let the cute face fool you she is a complete mischief maker. Follow her progress and exploits as we train her and integrate her with the two cats.

This handsome chap is Loki Oni a tabby moggy who was rescued from under a van, sadly it looked like he had been dumped outside as a kitten but he is now doing well. He is a complete menace who is always getting into trouble (running up curtains, dashing around and picking fights with our other cat) he is however a secret softie and likes hugs and kisses (with Feliway in the house at least) he may be a bugger but he is a very loveable bugger! There are plenty of stories I have to share about this little guy and with his rascal attitude I know there will be loads more to come!

Last but by no means least we have Godric Dagda, he is a grey moggy who is highly neurotic but incredibly loveable. Godric is the oldest of the pets so far. He likes sunbathing best and can be a bit anti-social and grumpy at times but wants nothing more than to cuddle up and nap, unless there is ribbon and then its game time! I hope you enjoy hearing about his mad moments as much as I enjoy watching them!
